Not much that I can add to the previous reviews. This tool is amazing. It is really not a machete in the normal sense, because the blade is too thick for slashing through light foliage. But it will do just about anything else. From the comfortable grip all the way to the sharpened square tip, this thing is a work horse. It chops better than a hatchet because it has such a long area to contact the wood. I have used it as a pull knife to shape wood for camp gadgets, shelters, etc.. It is so beefy that it requires little effort when chopping or trimming wood. I love the sheath, it is so versatile I can hang it from my belt, or use some paracord to attach it to the molle webbing on my backpack I have seen reviews that said that the SP-8 could not be withdrawn from the sheath without unsnapping all of the snaps, but the sheath that came with mine may have been slightly redesigned by moving the rivet near the top closer to the edge, I only have to unsnap the top strap, and tilt the SP-8 slightly to remove it from the sheath.
It goes with me on all of my campouts with my son's Boy Scout troop. It holds and edge very well, and is easy to resharpen. I have to keep it hidden away or all of the other campers will be trying to borrow it
I would have given the SP-8 all 10s, but, as stated in other reviews, the sawback leaves some to be desired, but it will do in a pinch if no other saw is available.
Overall, you can't go wrong with this survival tool, especially for the price. I find myself reaching for this almost exclusively while doing any outdoor chores.
Great job Ontario Knives

I just received my SP-8 from The Knife Center and I absolutely agree with this review. I do believe the "notch" in the blade has to do with balance. The designers did a great job with its shape. I live in Florida and our woods are very thick and I believe that a short machete is more ideal than a long machete. A long machete gets caught in the over-hang vines and branches. I am glad he clarified the saw back is to be used as a "notcher". My primary use is: Self-Defense and survival, batoning fire wood (I can't see harming a $200 knife for this) and for lopping off the heads of large fish. I live on the Tampa Bay and struggle cleaning fish. I also own a Woodsmen's Pal but find it lacking...and it's hard to sharpen. The SP-8 would be a cinch to re-sharpen because of its flat blade. The weight is not terrible! The momentum of that heavier blade zips right through wood. The more I use the sheath--the more I like it. I may make my own Kydex sheath so it can be deployed faster in an emergency. Good job with the review.

Appreciation for this write-up. I've seen this tool take so much flak for the 'saw', that this seems to be a good place to mention that it's not intended to be a saw - it's a notching tool designed to create a entry points so that the chisel built onto the end may be employed. Think: log cabin or similar construction. Great Tool!
