I have always been fascinated by the idea of owning Automatic Knife, but to own one in at least my state is illegal (other than active military, police or if you only have one arm) and is out of the question.

My son is active military so I had the chance to try his 5300SBK out, then I went to my local gun store with him and saw the 583SBK-Warm and we compared them.

The 583SBK-Warm (the black semi serrated blade version) is completely legal in my state and all over the USA, but it did leave me wondering why do you need an Auto with FAST action on this BEAUTIFUL Knife.

The build quality is absolutely superb and the G10 Scales are very hardy without any rubbing off on my sons 5300SBK black coating that's plagued it.

I found the scale quality is superior to the normal 580 version in a NASTY PLASTIC scales and the action is extremely smooth, now I say who needs an Auto when you can have one of these.

This knife really covers the whole gambit from self defense to simply peeling an orange and the RED back spacer just makes the knife POP.

You know it's a great knife when that he prefers it to what the Military Issued HIM....:)

I think it was a little pricey at first, but is well worth it in the long run..!!!

I've used this knife now for about 3-5 months. I rotate it with a Spyderco folder as an EDC.

Pros - This think just looks great and the quality is amazing. Very durable and feels pretty good in the hand. Above all else, the assisted opening is flawless, after moving the thumb stud a little the blade flys open very quickly and even has a quite a kick compared to any other assisted opener i've used. I've never owned a knife with D2 tool steel before this one, but from what i've seen, it sharpens quite easily and holds an edge very well, and very durable, I've dropped it numerous times(and so has a friend of mine because of the opening kick)and not until a recent drop did the tip chip. Not a worry though, it wasn't much that chipped off and easily sharpened back to a decent tip until i sharpen the blade up a few more times later on to match up with the tip.

Cons - Not too much to say here, but personally i think the grip could use a little more traction, especially on the thumb ramp.

All in all, a very solid, good looking knife with an impressive assisted opening action. Definately a very good quality knife

Torx 8 and 6 cover pretty much all Benchmade screws.

I received the knife last week as an early Christmas present-on sale at $120. It arrived in just two days from an outfit in Ohio. The knife is solid and weighs a little more than expected due to the materials so it will take a little getting used to to carry daily. I thought I ordered the model with the rubber grips but it came with the G-10. Benchmade should have included the screw wrench so I'm having to hunt one up to avoid paying an additional $20 for a set I probably will never need. If you're in the same boat, I think it's a torx 8. One thing I would change is the plastic thumb safety that seems a little light on an otherwise quality knife. Everything else in good order thus far but I have yet to put any miles on it.
