Another exceptional design and of highest quality. This knife rocks so well that I bought two--one for myself and one for my son! The Tri-Ad lock is awesome.

I bought this knife accidentally. At first I thought that it is too big, too clumsy and not appropriate for every day carry. But this is a big mistake! After I bought I never get out of my home without it. The blade shape is great - not suitable only for cutting or slashing but for stabbing too. The handle is with best ergonomics among the knives. I was very surprised how comfortably this folder can be carry in the pocket without any discomfort. The only remark that I have is for the steel. I think, it will be better if Cold Steel used San Mai

This is my EDC folder. Yeah, it is large, a bit heavyand big. But the other side of the coin is that it isbuilt like a tank, has a heftly blade that will just about do anything needed, feels great in the hand and can be a lifesaver in many situations. I like bigger knives because they can do just about everything thesmaller knives can do and much more the smaller knives can not do. I highly recommend this knife if you needa folder that will stand up to anything you throw at it.

One Man, One Knife? Get Real! I carry Two!

It's Funny how mass media and our favorite military wannabe youtube guys like to state that they carry only one knife and that this would be the only knife that they would carry, and it is even more astounding that we have seen even more nitwits with these knifes thrusting their blades trough steel doors and chairs just to make a statement. yet, however bogus these video may seem they do tell some truth, to date I've owned may a cold steel blades, everything from the tiger claw karambit, to the machete. and over all they've been pretty impressive for the price, and this knife is no exception. with it's impressive weight and durability I would proclaim that this knife is not simply a tactical wannabe, but a true fighting mans blade. not two weeks after did I make my initial purchase did i go out and buy two more. an extra one for my belt, and one for my buddy. in all I usually carry about four blades and hands down, two of them are these spartans. now unlike most i won't be going out to cause a massacre for all to know, or catch the eyes of my local news station as the next jack the ripper, but i will say this, if old Jackie dose appear in front of me, you can be damn sure that he'll have a damn hard time cuttin me up with these in my hands.

pros: good weight, strong blade, good edge, great handle.

cons: spring clip is set way to low that it's hard to deploy quickly.

{side note} con can be solved with some cord tied into the convenient holes that they have drilled into the end to make a tail to grab on to, to deploy.

Here's the deal for anyone living in a free state that "allows" its citizens to own what they please. Getting trapped in an office building with glitchy fire doors is far more likely to happen than needing a serious folder in the wilderness. Gone are the days when a sturdy axe was available on every floor, but with something like the Spartan you won't need one. Carrying a fixed blade with comparable strength is simply not possible for most, so for those who aren't all weepy about carrying a few extra OUNCES around, the Spartan might be the way to go.

Strong, comes sharp, easy to re-sharpen.

If your on the look-out for a large size tactical/defensive folder that won't drain your bank account...well, this is it! The Cold Steel Spartan!

I purchased this knife for the exact reasons stated above. I wanted a primarily defensive knife that would do exceedingly well. As i stated before, this knife is well beyond its price point as far as overall quality and value is concerned. These can be had for around 50-60 USD. The first thing i noticed when i opened the box was the sheer size and weight of this knife. 7.5 Oz., 4 1/2" blade, and 10 1/2" overall! Despite its large size and heft, the Spartan features a hilariously small pocket clip (and an extra for left-handed carry). It is useful but the knife is still slightly exposed when in the pocket. The blade steel is Japanese AUS-8A and the handle is Grivory. The blade steel has very nice "semi-matte" satin finish that has good wear resistance. The edge comes razor sharp from the factory and the steel isn't difficult to touch up. The blade shape has a very aggressive recurve to it; reminiscent of a khukri design. This is what makes the knife so great as a defensive blade. The recurve will slash like nothing is in its way and the robust, yet sharp tip will pierce if need be. The blade is hollow ground and also has a swedge ground into the spine. This makes for a very asthetically pleasing design and a practical one. The handle is Grivory; a material I can best describe as a mix of Zytel and G10. The handle is very ergonomic and has two very deep finger choils which provide a superb grip. The handle shape is styled after the Kopis swords of anctient Greece. The grivory is finely textured and is fluted for added grip and looks. The Spartan features the Tri-Ad lock whcih locks up very solidly and exhibits no play at all. The blade is deployed by the thumb plate. This plate can also double as "Emerson" style pocket opener. It catches on the edge of the pocket when drawing the knife and deploys the blade. This is an excellent advantage to have on a defensive folder, especially on one that looks like it would be very slow to open. Everything about this knife is above expectations in my opinion. Its bomb-proof and can take very hard abuse. The blade shape, deployment speed, solid ergonomics and size make this one of the best tactical/ defensive folders on the market!

luke, you just need more experience. don't give up...and save some question marks for later :) you don't own a better knife than this one. it's perfect

Comment by Renato   11/19/2014
AUS 8 is better than those hard brittle steels. And 1060 C in a pocket. Are you kidding? The thing will rust all over.I have the Recon 1 spear point.I stabbed it in wood and twisted it side ways. The tip is tough as f**k.What did you do to the knife to break it.I call BS on your breakage Luke.

Comment by Knight88   02/20/2014
OK lets be honest this is a boss knife, nice handeling good price ect... but the steel is not the best like they shoudve went with sv30 cause man if they with that steel this would be an unstobable knife by cold. Dont get me wrong though awesome knife good every day use and I guess tacticl to an extent but (theres the but again) the steel isnt the best.still totaly recomend this blade to anyone looking for self defense blade and a biker ( motorcyle ) cause I got one of these puppies and there awesome.still overall good blade. ( I remeber I was in a fist fight when I pulled this thing there wasnt a fist fight after cause the guy had ran faster then the roadrunner back home lol)

Dude what are u talking about the cs spartan is great its ur bad luck

Comment by luke   06/08/2012
The aus 8 is shit, i broke it after 5 minutes, it's too hard for this tipe of blade, they should have use the 1060 c, that is more resilient of the aus 8 and definitly much better.... What is the reason for using the tri ad lock, that is hard like rock; with grivory, and the nice design of the kopis, with this rubbish-steel made in taiwan by some slaves???????
