Esee knives are some of the most affordable yet very high quality knives for the price. The all are very well designed and come ready to go straight out of the box. Once you get one, there's not much else to do than put it on your belt and use it. I got tired of spending hundreds of dollars on Busses which did not even come with sheaths. I had to order custom sheaths which was just another expense and hassle. In the end, it was hardly worth it. Esee has take the outdoor knife world by storm and are making kick ass knives that most everyone can afford and use (instead of keeping in a safe). The ESEE 5 is a stellar knife that you'd be very lucky to have it with you when you really need a heavy duty knife. Nothing bad to say about the Esee 5 except that it will rust when not maintained, just like most knives will.

I love this knife, I have added a large Tek-Lok to the sheath to be able "scout carry" I also have an Esee accessory pouch with a survival tin along with a kydex firesteel sheath. This is my "go to" knife for all outdoor activities. I have put it through the ringer as a bushcraftknife, a cooking knife and a large game skinning knife. It takes and holds an edge perfectly. I saw a review that it isn't ergonamically comfortable, but I think that my just be a personal preference, everyone that has used mine has purchased one of their own. As for chopping,I don't think it is designed to be a"chopper", the point of balance is too near the center for much more than trimming smaller branches one handed. If you are looking for a great longer heavy blade for chopping I suggest the Ontario SP-8. I have used my Esee -5 it to notch tent pegs and I have had no issues batoning with it, the weight and thickness of the blade make it an all around great outdoor knife. I have not yet tried the bow drill divot so I can't comment on it's effectivness.

I would (and have) recommend this knife to any serious outdoorsman, or even a part time camper. It stays with me in my truck as part of my Get Home gear. Sort of like American Express I don't leave home without it. Great job Esee Knives!

The ESEE 5 is an overall tough, very high quality, tactical/Survival knife. The sheath is perfect, and the .25inch thick spine is indestructible. The problem I have is the ergonomics. The handle is thick and blocky and not as comfortable for long use compared to the Ka-Bar BK2. The handle is not designed well for chopping either, the knife wants to fly out of your hand when chopping even with a lanyard. All in All the quality is there and the tough blade is great, the handle is where I have my only complaints.

The user needs to use a lanyard around his wrist when chopping with the ESEE 5. You hold it more toward the back of the handle which increases your leverage and ability to use a snapping action. Yes, a hatchet or axe is far superior to the ESEE 5 for chopping tasks, but this is the way to get the most from this knife's design when chopping.

Comments:

Heavy weight. Too large for EDC. Excellent edge retention and built like a tank.
